Art Spiegelman
Art Spiegelman revolutionized the comic in his graphic novel ‘Maus: A Survivor’s Tale’, which tells the story of his father’s experience in Nazi Germany portraying the Jews as mice. In this 1991 interview, the editor and comics advocate talks about writing ‘Maus’, which at that point appeared in monthly installments in his magazine RAW. The finished version won a Pulitzer Prize. Spiegelman explains why he called RAW required reading for the post-literate; what comics (or comix as he preferred to call them) can do that other art cannot; and what it was like to interview his father for ‘Maus’. In 1992 Spiegelman began a decade as contributing artist for The New Yorker.
