Alex Gibney: We Steal Secrets

When filmmaker Alex Gibney (born on 23 October 1953) began working a documentary titled ‘We Steal Secrets’, he thought the Julian Assange saga was a David versus Goliath story. But as he got deeper into the research, his view became more nuanced. Since this interview was recorded on May 18th, 2013, Assange was denied bail, pending an appeal by the United States on charges of espionage. On December 10, 2021, a London court ruled that Assange can be extradited to the US to face the charges. Assange has been confined in Belmarsh maximum-security prison in London since April 2019. Bradley Manning changed her name to Chelsea Manning and was convicted in July 2013 on espionage charges. She was imprisoned from 2010 until 2017 when her sentence was commuted.
