Lawrence Lessig Remix

How can artists protect their copyright without unfairly restricting the ability of other artists to reuse and remix their work? What does fair use mean when it comes to remixing? Harvard professor and author Lawrence Lessig sorts though the issues in his 2009 book Remix: Making Art and Commerce Thrive in the Digital Economy. In this interview he talks about cases including the photographer who sued artist Shephard Fairey for using his photo as the basis for the famous ‘Hope’ drawing of Barack Obama, the mother forced to take down You-tube video of her infant son because he’s dancing to a snippet a Prince song, and the musician Girl Talk who samples and remixes other people’s musical. Lessig argues we can reduce corruption in government by adopting citizen funded elections.
