Happy Birthday, Arlie Hochschild

Berkeley sociologist Arlie Hochschild (born January 15, 1940) was prescient. Before Trump, she spent five years with far-right, white, rural working-class people in Louisiana to understand why people in red states - who get more federal support than other places - hated the federal government. She learned their perspective - Hochschild calls it their deep story - to gain a deeper understanding. She provides great insight into the roots of our deep political divide and speaks of crossover issues where both agree.
